Everyday rewards card

Woolworths Dollars phased out Qantas Points to return

13 October 2016

Woolworths confirmed today that Woolworth Dollars are to be phased out with the relaunch its rewards scheme on August 31st 2016 when they will re-introduce the opportunity to earn Qantas frequent flyer points on your supermarket shop.

The revised Woolworths Rewards program will also extend to Woolworth - Caltex service stations and BWS bottle shops, which where absent from the Dollar program.

Under the new program, which goes live on August 31st, shoppers will earn “Woolworths Points”, with one point earned on every $1 spent at Woolworths Supermarkets, Woolworth - Caltex service stations and BWS bottle shops. When Woolworths Everyday Reward cardcustomers reach 2,000 points, or $2,000 of spending, they will have the opportunity to convert them into $10 instant discount at the checkout, or 870 Qantas Frequent Flyer Points.

Commenting on the new program, Ingrid Maes, Woolworths Director of Loyalty and Customer data said “When we launched Woolworths Rewards, we made a commitment to put our members first and make improvements in response to their feedback,”

“We are pleased that our members have responded positively to automatically getting money off their shopping. However, we’ve acknowledged that we didn’t deliver enough orange ticket offers in-store and while many of our members have been rewarded well, too many have not.”

“By introducing a guaranteed reward per dollar spent at Woolworths supermarkets, BWS and selected Caltex Woolworths, all members receive a reward when shopping with us.”

The embarrassing backflip comes just nine months after Woolworths ditched its previous Frequent Flyer partnership for the Woolworths Dollars scheme, which resulted in significant negative customer feedback.

It will be interesting to see how customers respond to this re launch, sure it brings back the popular Qantas Points option but the rate at which these are earned is significantly reduced under the new program. For example under the original scheme back in 2015, a spend of $100 at Woolworths could earn 70 Qantas Points, this same spend in the 2016 program will only earn 43 points, a 38% reduction in Qantas Points earned.

These reduced earn rates means that a one-way flight from Sydney to Melbourne, which requires around 8,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer Points, would require a spend of over $18,000.

Here’s our summary of the key features for Qantas Frequent Flyers under the new Woolworths program:

  • Earn Rates - Earn Qantas Points at a minimum rate of 0.43 points for $1 spent at Woolworths Supermarkets, Caltex Woolworths Petrol and BWS.

  • No minimum spend to earn - Under the previous program Points were only earned on each dollar spent over $30.
  • Woolworths Points - Each dollar spent will earn Woolworth Points that Frequent Flyers can opt-in to convert to Qantas Points, the minimum amount to convert is 2,000 Woolworths Points that will deliver 870 Qantas Points.
