Citi Launches Citi Pay as a challenge to Apple Pay and Android Pay.

15 November 2016

Citi is the latest to enter the mobile wallet wars, where it will compete with Apple Pay, Android Pay, PayPal, Samsung Pay, and others.

On November 10th 2016 in the US Citi unveiled Citi Pay their new mobile wallet for Android phone users. The concept is similar to Android Pay, Google’s mobile payments service, in that customers load Citi credit card and debit card information onto an Android app.

Once set up Citi Card holders can then use the Citi Pay app to make in-store purchases at retailers whose point-of-sale registers support the near-field communication (NFC) technology. To make a payment users simply place their phones near the registers’ sensors for payments instead of swiping their credit or debit card.

Citi cardholders can also use their Citi online login and password information to make online purchases and in-app purchases. Citi has also partnered with Mastercard to leverage its digital payment service, Masterpass, to enable the online and in-app transactions. This will allow Citi customers to use Citi Pay at hundreds of thousands of merchants across 33 countries at launch.

Citi Pay will roll out later this year to customers in Australia, which will be one of the launch countries for the app along with Singapore and Mexico.

This launch follows Citi’s initiative earlier this year to enable Samsung Pay for its card members in Australia, which will continue to be supported once Citi Pay is launched later in the year.
