ANZ adds Samsung Pay to its payment options

19 July 2017

ANZ customers will from today be able to use their Samsung phones for payments, with the bank agreeing to add Samsung Pay to its range of contactless payment options.

This move further positions ANZ at the forefront of contactless payments following its move last year when it ,let its customers link their ANZ cards to the popular iPhone payment system, ANZ said that it had bowed to customer demand which had campaigned for the addition of Samsung Pay.

The platform is the fourth mobile payment service its customers can use, along with Apple Pay, Android Pay and its own ANZ Mobile Pay, with Samsung earlier revealing that it has synced its Samsung Pay services with PayPal. This means anyone with a PayPal account can use it to make purchases from vendors accepting Samsung Pay.

“Samsung Pay has an open partnership model and onboarding a major financial institution, like ANZ, gives more Australians the confidence to replace their physical wallets,” Mark Hodgson, Head of Products and Services, Samsung Electronics Australia told The Australian.

“We want to help provide more freedom and flexibility when using a smartphone to transact.

“It made sense for us to introduce Samsung Pay in Australia given its strong market share and open approach to technology that its customers highly value,” ANZ managing director products Bob Belan said in a statement. ANZ last year became the first major bank in Australia to sign up for Apple Pay, stating that it was acting in customers’ interest by providing them a service they wanted.

The competition regulator in March denied permission to four other banks to collectively bargain with Apple in an attempt to allow iPhone users to make mobile payments from their own digital wallets, rather than Apple Pay. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it was concerned the request from Westpac, Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Bendigo and Adelaide Banks would “reduce or distort competition” in several markets.
