AMEX launches the new American Express Explorer Credit Card

The new American Express Explorer credit card is a rewards credit card that can match the high frequent flyer point earn rates available on the Black level cards of many providers. At up to 1.5 frequent flyer points per dollar of eligible spend the Explorer card is clearly pitched at the frequent flyer, with points redeemable with 8 airline partners including Singapore Krisflyer Miles, Virgin Velocity, Emirates, Cathay Pacific and New Zealand Airpoints.

The annual card fee of $395 is in the mid range for Platinum level cards, though the sting of this fee is softened by the offer of $400 worth of travel credit each year which can be spent on flights, accommodation and a range of other travel related services such as car hire.American Express Explorer Credit Card

This Platinum Level card comes pre packaged with generous levels of complimentary travel insurance and also features the Smartphone screen insurance which to date was only available with the Essential credit card.

The benefits continue with two yearly visits to the American Express Lounge at Sydney Airport, which can be attained by simply showing your Explorer card at the lounge.

The introductory offer is amongst the most generous currently on offer with 100,000 Membership Rewards Gateway points available for new AMEX cardholders who apply by November 30th 2016 and spend at least $1,500 on the card within the first two months.

UPDATE: The closing date for the 100,000 Bonus Points has been extended to 30th January 2017

All AMEX Explorer cardholders are automatically signed up to the American Express Gateway Rewards Program through which any Rewards Points can be managed and redeemed. This program is different to the American Express Ascent and Ascent Premium Programs featured on the Platinum and Platinum Edge cards, as the points you earn have a lower frequent flyer conversion rate of 4:3 compared to 1:1 on the Ascent Programs.

So for example the 100,000 bonus points offered on the AMEX Explorer card are equal to 75,000 frequent flyer points with Virgin Australia, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Etihad, Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways, or $750 in Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars.

Points earned on the AMEX Explorer card cannot be transfers to Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Hilton HHonors or Starwood Preferred Guest accounts.

The point earn rate is amongst the highest in the market at 1.5 Member Reward Gateway Points per dollar of eligible spend, plus points can be earned, albeit at a reduced rate of 0.5 points per $1 on Government Transactions such as paying your tax bill.

To apply for an AMEX Expolrer card, you’ll need to earn at least $65,000 a year pre tax, achieve a minimum credit limit of $3,000 and agree to have your statements delivered electronically rather than via mail.

Bonus point eligibility

According to the AMEX website, members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Consumer Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.
